If the hard drive is accidentally removed or viewed by someone who isn't supposed to, an encrypted hard drive will protect the user's data. You can't get to the drive or its files without the key or password. There are many programs that can encrypt data that is stored on a computer or sent over a network. One of these is BitLocker from Microsoft.

There are Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, and Pro and Enterprise versions of Windows 8 and 8.1.

1. What Your System Needs to Run BitLocker 

BitLocker needs a few more things on your computer in addition to one of the versions of Windows that it works with. You need the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip and at least two files on your drive. The TPM's job is to check the firmware, hardware, and software on your machine for authenticity. If the TPM finds changes that weren't made by you, it will start your system in limited mode to keep you safe from attackers.

The best way to keep private data safe is to encrypt any device or data. A problem could happen if the password used for the protection is lost when it's needed. There's no way you can avoid knowing the secret! Make sure you don't forget your password or that you keep a copy of it somewhere safe.
